Gear Review: TASCAM DR-40 Linear PCM Recorder

In Gear Review by Patrick

I recently read a blog post by another photographer who used recorders to interview subjects, dictate notes and simply record ideas when out in the field. I have used other recording devices in the past, but they all seemed to fall short when it came to sound quality and their ability to upload the files.

Enter the TASCAM DR-40 Linear PCM Recording device. This gets good reviews and was recommended by B&H when I called them to ask what they thought I needed. So far I have been very impressed with its form and function. This boasts a very robust set of features such as:

  • Low noise, high quality steror condenser mics
  • Switchable mic positions from AP to XY
  • 4 track recording
  • Built in and external mic lines
  • Timer recording
  • USB 2.0 port for uploading
  • Tripod screw hole
  • Included SD card
  • Not sure if you are in the market for something like this, but I can highly recommend this device if you do a lot of interviews or recording of sounds.
