Portable Blind

In Gear Review by Patrick

With most wildlife, they don’t allow you to get real close and this makes long glass an essential piece of a wildlife photographers gear. In addition to long glass, often camouflage helps to break up your silhouette further assisting in getting closer to the subject. I was asked to trial the Tragopan V Plus photographers blind. Not one to gain an opportunity to shoot any critter or bird that I can, I gave it a try.

Although the blind looks small, it is rather roomy. I sat this up in my backyard to photography birds. I had room for a folding chair, my tripod with Wimberly head and my Nikon D5 with Nikkor 200-400 VRII with the flash arm and SB-5000 speedlight attached. It requires a bit of effort the first time to get the supports in to support the roof and to fold when taking down but after doing it a few times, it becomes easier.

The blind can be customized with mesh or open windows so that you can shoot out threes sides based on your needs. It comes with several interchangeable window panes and lens sleeves that can be used on the blinds main shooting window. Options are provided for using a flash and the blind features a four way zipper that can be used to extend a tripod leg outside of the blind. This provides more room in the blind for the photographer and a better sitting position between the tripod legs. The opening can also be adjusted for ground level shooting.

Each side of the blind has a zippered window with three built in options – totally closed, a mesh shooting window, or completely open. Two peep hole are located on either side of the windows. The door on the rear of the blind includes a large mesh window that can be left closed, screened, or completely open. This provides great ventilation and additional shooting/visibility options. The V PLUS is constructed of sturdy weather resistant polyester and uses large quiet nylon zippers. It packs down easily into a small bag with adjustable straps for use like a backpack

It is a bit on the heavy side when trying to travel light, but overall, this blind is something that I would use to get great captures of shy wildlife and birds. Constructed well I would recommend this anyone looking for a nice hide.
