Why blog

In Random Thoughts by contact@patrickcomtoisphotography.comLeave a Comment

Way back when I first started this blog, it was just to say that I had a blog. It was the in thing at the time. I really did not have perspective on what the blog would be other than to put photographs up for others to see. Since then my blog has gone through a number of revisions and refinements that has grown with my photography. It seems an odd thing to write a blog post about the value of blogging. I mean, if you’re reading this blog, it suggests you place some sort of value on the medium.

As more people began to discover my blog, my responsibility to them came into clearer view. Readers were actually asking my opinion on things photographic. I did not claim to know it all and I was very genuine with them while discussing my thoughts on their questions and chosen topics. I still don’t know it all, and I am constantly learning each and every day when it comes to photography.

As my photography has grown, so has the need for the blog. Primarily to share and tell the stories behind the photographs. As I look back on my photographic journey and the blogs that I gravitated towards, they were ones that shared stories that excited you about getting out to shoot and information shared that kept me from making the same mistakes that they had encountered or had to overcome. The evolution of the blog has been beneficial for the following reasons:

Helping to Spread Knowledge

To spread knowledge about photography and my business. There is an interesting thing with specialist blogs: when you read the behind-the-scenes details of some profession, you inevitably notice that the author clearly knows his stuff, since he understands and talks about all these subtleties. That is how I have built a following. And such a reputation builds trust and opens up new opportunities.

Sum things up while teaching

To save time so I don’t have to explain the same thing over and over again. Imagine that you’ve written a large, comprehensive post about how you do business or recommendation of a piece of gear. And then conversations, many people ask you about this topic. Instead of telling everything all over again, you can kindly offer the person to read about it on your blog if he or she is interested.

Genuinely help people

Most of the time I probably won’t even know when something I have written has helped someone move forward in their photography, unless they reach out to tell me so. This has happened and gives me satisfaction knowing that. People tend to react more strongly to things they don’t like than to be thankful for things that help them. Nevertheless, knowing that the knowledge I share will help others learn something new, come to unusual conclusions, or inspire development in their field is worth the time.

I have committed to sharing not only what I have learned, the stories behind my images and gear that has made life easier as photographer so hopefully someone will be inspired by what they read and the cycle will continue to and help answer the question, why blog.
